Masinloc Power Partners Co. Ltd (MPPCL), a wholly owned subsidiary of SMC Global Power Holdings Corp., owns and operates the Masinloc Power Plant located in Masinloc, Zambales. The 659-Megawatt Masinloc Power Plant represents about 3% of the country's total installed capacity. Composed of two units with 315 MW and 344 MW, respectively, the plant is substantially contracted through medium and long-term bilateral contracts with various distribution utilities. MPPCL is also a registered Retail Electricity Supplier for industrial customers.
The Masinloc Power Plant is situated in a 137-hectare lot in Masinloc, Zambales. It is about 250 kilometers northwest of Manila and faces the South China Sea in the west, the Lauis River in the north, the National Highway No. 3 in the east, and lies along the coastline of Oyon Bay in the south.
Installed and commissioned by the National Power Corporation, the Masinloc Power Plant went online in 1998. In 2008, however, the plant was acquired by The AES Corporation, as part of the government's privatization efforts under the EPIRA. With the rehabilitation efforts completed in 2010, the output of 433MW improved to 630 MW. Drop in minimum load from 150MW to 75MW. Thus, the overall plant efficiency grew by 13%.
In March 2018, SMC Global Power Holdings acquired indirectly 100% of AES's interests in the Philippines, through various intermediate entities. The said acquisition includes the existing operating plant, the additional 330-Megawatt Masinloc Expansion Project that features supercritical boiler technology and is currently under commissioning stage, and the 10MW Battery Energy Storage System, among the first grid scale battery energy storage facility in Southeast Asia.
